TEAL GRAPEFRUIT, from Lexington, Kentucky, includes members of CROSS, Elsinores, Salad Influence and Arcane Rifles dabbling in death jangle funk. This show is their debut!

Watch the video for TEAL GRAPEFRUIT’s “My Youth” here:

A recent review of PIGEONS‘ newest album The Bower from Wire Magazine reads “The Bower is just as smart as it’s predecessors but, perhaps unexpectedly, it marks a move toward an acid rock sound, with many of the songs now defined or even dominated by rainbow-hued guitar solos.”

Watch the 2011 video for PIGEONS‘ “Tournoi” here:

CRYSTALLINE ROSES is Anthony Pasquarosa, “a goddamn monster of readymade acid folk transcendentalism. Since Feeding Tube released the One Man Cult LP back in 2010, Tony has done a wonderful solo guitar album for VDSQ, the insane space-sludge of World Domination (also on Feeding Tube), the raunch zonk of Gluebag, and various other projects far too numerous to name… Tony creates a classic late night smoker soundtrack. A brilliant journey into and beyond ego, the blend of guitar, voice, bells, bamboo flute and whatnot will be transportational for even the straightest listeners. His album Cosmic Driftwood represents some of the deepest acoustic-based psych we’ve had the pleasure of hearing in a long while. It makes a lot of Tony’s contemporaries sound about as interesting as Smurph sing-alongs (no names) [sic], and is an instant classic. Get out your pipe and relax.” –Byron Coley, 2015

ECSTATIC GIRTH SURVIVAL UNIT is a sonic blast from members of Tropical Trash, Insect Policy, Sapat and more!

Velvet lined steam roller tactics mean TROPICAL TRASH’s LP debut UFO Rot descends from the sky straight onto your brain stem. This is potent stuff, meant to be taken in controlled doses. Load the spoon full and heat up gradually. The band has existed for two previous 7”’s but really comes roaring out of the gate with black hat tales and some lineup changes. May very well be the album you use for whatever you do when you are not reading the internet. Instead of trace papering some shadow punks of previous dictatorships, these patriots pull the curtain back and show the emperor sporting some very exotic under carriage, and spew forth tales with cop stashes, Area 51 belly bloat, and new reconfigured mainframe math – this is the new form. Nine condensed blasts of well honed songcraft that really put them at the top of the heap of the rock heap, with paranoid punk, and an eagerness to melt it all down and make it into something bold and badass. Don’t sleep on this one comrade.

AARON ROSENBLUM, MARLOWE-LUCAS-ZINK-KOMARA, and FLESH LIGHTS at KAIJU, Monday, May 18th

NONE Productions and The Other Side of Life are proud to present:

AARON ROSENBLUM

MARLOWE-LUCAS-ZINK-KOMARA

FLESH LIGHTS

Monday, May 18th
at KAIJU

Check out the Facebook invitation here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1618517285027274/1619508844928118/
Recommended If You Like: Sapat, Tropical Trash, Insect Policy, Obnox, The Gotobeds

For more than a decade, AARON ROSENBLUM has improvised and composed on guitar, violin, percussion, found instruments, field recordings and tape from headquarters in Massachusetts, Kentucky, Maine, Quebec and New York. Son of Earth, a trio with John Shaw (Magik Markers) and Matt Krefting, has released several LPs of low-volume electro-acoustics and continues to explore the boundaries of live performance practice. From 2005 to 2008, and 2013 to ∞, he has been multi-instrumental in psychedelic Louisville underground group Sapat. He has collaborated, recorded or performed with or as a guest member of Watersports, Sunburned Hand of the Man, Spectre Folk, Wooden Wand, the Cherry Blossoms, New Mother Nature, Joshua Burkett, Andrea-Jane Cornell and Gmackrr. His solo and group recordings have appeared on the record labels Siltbreeze, Amish, Polyamory, Black Velvet Fuckere, Apostasy and his own Hank the Herald Angel Recordings.

Guitarist/vocalist Max Vandever and cousin Elissa Ussery (drums/vocals) migrated from San Antonio and began their assault on Austin’s live music dumps in 2008 playing as a duo under ill-advised names including but not limited to Candle Shop & The Psychic Reader, Dead Ledger and Carousel Images. After poaching bassist/vocalist Jeremy Steen from an early lineup of The Gospel Truth, the newly dubbed FLESH LIGHTS (this name being approved by a focus group — A PERVERTED FOCUS GROUP), the trio quickly became a fixture on whatever you-got-songs-in-my-punk / you-got-punk-in-my-songs circuit that began to coalesce around the alleged live music capital.

“Spend some time in Louisville, Kentucky and you will find it is one of the most unassumingly strange places in America. The ratio of grown folks to millennials in attendance at any rock gig seems roughly 3:1. Such events take place in places like caves and chicken coops, among other nontraditional venues. Hip, transgressive people don’t seem to outgrow hip, transgressive things here; no one seems very eager to settle for a life less weird. Catherine Irwin of the great Louisville/Chicago band Freakwater — who lends her inimitable vocal talents to several tunes on Fantasy Error, the latest album by STATE CHAMPION — once joked that the evergreen nature (no pun intended) of the Louisville scene was due to the dearth of area vocational schools. If an album has been made in this young century that better captures the essence of this burg than Fantasy Error, I haven’t heard it.

STATE CHAMPION‘s punked-up country gunk frequently recalls both the Aristotelian pathos of bands like Souled American and Palace Brothers and the character-driven black humor of indie ironists like Camper Van Beethoven and the Supreme Dicks. Mere homage, however, is not STATE CHAMPION‘s line. Singer and head honcho Ryan Davis is a sharp, astute lyricist, the kind of songwriter who probably gets tired of people asking him why he doesn’t try his hand at short story writing. Indeed, Fantasy Error‘s depictions of postmasters and county coroners, Dickensian drinkers and ‘teardrop pushers’ are as vivid as they are familiar, sung with the conviction of a Drag City-damaged Chris Knight. The musicians provide the perfect foil, loose without trying too terribly hard to appear ‘ramshackle.’ Frayed horsehair bows are dragged across fiddle wire and banjos frail for dear life; fuzzy, unfussy electric guitars bend, scrimmage, and howl while subtle synthesizers interject ominously through the din; even the percussion sounds bleary-eyed and broken-up with.

Fantasy Error is a great rock and roll record, equal parts Springsteen and noise scene, as American as broken traffic lights and bad trips.

“The banner yet waves!”

– James Jackson Toth (January 2015)

Spawned from the formidable Louisville, Kentucky collective known as Black Velvet Fuckere, SAPAT resides as the centrifugal force in this Midwestern psychedelic madrigal set in the psychosexual backwaters of the mighty Ohio River. For the entirety of the ‘00 decade, members have kept busy collaborating with and/or massaging the egos of various and sundry avant-pontiffs such as Robert Fripp, Magik Markers, Dead Child and Eugene Chadbourne – when not honing the orgone energy of SAPAT. Their most recent LP, A Posthuman Guide to the Advent Calendar Origins of the Peep Show, was released last fall on Sophomore Lounge Records.

NEW BRAVADO returns to us from atop a golden star making golden showers of golden acid on our brown, dirty heads. Blueing and blacking, this band has appreciated further time travels, backpassing Sabbath and instead bounding into the heavy psych and power fuzz of the 60s, whence came Eden’s Children, Banshee, Lincoln Street Exit.” –American Gloam

KILLER MOON is a psychedelic journey of three friends throughout the best years and times of our lives, reflected within our music. We are chasing a high mountain one that will enrich our souls, and make us better people and musicians. Our journey is one of love, anger, pain, sweat, and blood. Psychedelic jam band with classic rock and doomy sludge undertones. Extended instrumentals paired with ambient vocals make KILLER MOON a must see for anyone looking to expand their mind and musical horizons.

MIMI VON SCHNITZL began on four-track by J.Glenn — a.k.a. Mimi Von — in the summer of 2005. The spring of 2011 brought new life on keyboards from Rory Hanka creating swaths of colour from a Hammond and Korg. Andy Matter soon rounded out the sound with his 21-fret bass guitar named Belmont. Floating through the stratosphere as a three-piece, playing the occasional live gig with friends setting in to fill out the sound, MVS began recording as a three piece at Kent O’Bryan’s Wax and Tape Recording Studio in the winter of 2012. The sessions yielded half of the tracks that would become the debut MVS album. Expert circuit bender/guitar pedal builder Jace Stone was invited to shred an electric guitar solo on “Jenkum Jam.” a song on “Head Cleaner: A Louisville Music Compilation” by Gubbey records in 2013, and he has been with the outfit ever since. Following a fine tuning of the songs at Rory’s digs in Clarksville, IN, MVS would return to Wax and Tape as a four piece in 2014 to flesh out its first album to completion.

TEMPLE OF THE GOLDEN DAWN: Spiritual awakenings through low-frequency bombardment as well as transcendental mind expansion using electric four- and six-string techniques.

It’s safe to say that PETER BRÖTZMANN is one of the most revered jazz musicians alive today. A saxophonist as well as clarinetist, BRÖTZMANN has released over fifty albums as a bandleader, and has appeared on over one hundred albums total. His1968 recording Machine Gun is considered one of his many classics within the realms of free jazz and European free improvisation, but he certainly didn’t stop there. BRÖTZMANN has also recorded or performed with a gigantic roster of musicians as diverse as Han Bennink, Fred Van Hove, Derek Bailey, Frank Wright, Cecil Taylor, Keiji Haino, Mats Gustafsson, Ken Vandermark, Conny Bauer, Joe McPhee, and his son, Caspar Brötzmann, a notable guitarist in his own right.

HAMID DRAKE is widely regarded as one of the best percussionists in jazz and improvised music. Incorporating Afro-Cuban, Indian, and African percussion instruments and influence, in addition to using the standard trap set, Drake has collaborated extensively with top free-jazz improvisers around the world, including trumpeter Don Cherry; pianist Herbie Hancock; saxophonists Pharoah Sanders, Fred Anderson, Archie Shepp and David Murray; and bassists Reggie Workman and William Parker.

A native of The Bronx, New York’s WILLIAM PARKER is certainly no slouch in the company of BRÖTZMANN and DRAKE. Indeed, the bassist began his career in the 1970s playing with Cecil Taylor, and released his first album as a leader, Through Acceptance of the Mystery Peace, all the way back in 1981. He has played with David S. Ware, Jimmy Lyons, Derek Bailey, John Zorn, Charles Gayle, Wayne Horvitz, Roscoe Mitchell, Matthew Shipp, and in the group Other Dimensions in Music. The main force behind New York’s Vision Festival, PARKER is also an avid poet and author.

It is an absolute pleasure and an honor to bring musicians of this caliber to DREAMLAND!

Additionally, DREAMLAND is screening the documentary SOLDIER OF THE ROAD: A PORTRAIT OF PETER BRÖTZMANN on Thursday, May 22nd at 7 and 9 PM. Each screening is $10, and tickets are available here:

7 PM Screening — http://www.ticketfly.com/event/573901-soldier-road-portrait-louisville/;
9 PM Screening — http://www.ticketfly.com/event/573905-soldier-road-portrait-louisville/.

Attendees at each screening will be entered to win two tickets to the BRÖTZMANN/DRAKE/PARKER performance at DREAMLAND on Saturday, June 7th, a $50 value!
