Spawned from the formidable Louisville, Kentucky collective known as Black Velvet Fuckere, SAPAT resides as the centrifugal force in this Midwestern psychedelic madrigal set in the psychosexual backwaters of the mighty Ohio River. For the entirety of the ‘00 decade, members have kept busy collaborating with and/or massaging the egos of various and sundry avant-pontiffs such as Robert Fripp, Magik Markers, Dead Child and Eugene Chadbourne – when not honing the orgone energy of SAPAT. Their most recent LP, A Posthuman Guide to the Advent Calendar Origins of the Peep Show, was released last fall on Sophomore Lounge Records.

PETE NOLAN has been a figure in the U.S. underground basement psych scene for the past two decades. A co-founder of legendary noise-rock outfit Magik Markers (with whom he’s amassed over 50 releases), Nolan has collaborated with the likes of Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley (who serves as drummer for his long-running Spectre Folk project), Jandek, J. Mascis, John Olson, Randy “Lee” Sutherland, Chris Corsano, Thurston Moore, Angst Hase Pfeffer Nase, Elisa Ambrogio, Double Leopards, Son of Earth, Julie Cafritz, Kris Abplanalp (as Virgin Eye Blood Brothers), Brian Ramirez, Steve Gunn, Aaron Mullan, Mick Flower, Ashtray Navigations, Kim Gordon, and Mark Ibold. Taking cues from time spent in pro studios with the likes of Lee Ranaldo, Scott Colburn, and Aaron Mullan but never straying too far from his base as a sound collage artist, Nolan wrote, recorded, and mixed his new album, the first under his name, Easy at home with the assistance of his wife, Julie. If you listen closely, you can hear Nolan electrocuting Mark E. Smith mid-performance and enslaving the Clean, making them play the funky drummer for days and days while Eno whirls his Revox in stormy guilt ridden dreams. But don’t be scared off, that’s just the process. The big payback of Easy is a joyful exaltation of life, freedom, mind-expansion, and love. It’s the long way around to a simplified meaning, it’s the goal achieved in the describing, it’s an invitation to get up and dance… it’s Easy.

ZACHARY CALE has been releasing records under his own name for just shy of a decade. Duskland, the title of his latest record, is a work of craftsmanship full of elegant lyricism and mysterious imagery; a collection of songs that look directly into the face of darkness yet drive beyond it, forging new paths. Taking cues from artists like Oh Mercy/Time Out of Mind-era Dylan and Nick Cave’s work with the Bad Seeds, Duskland evokes a restless spirit, one that is informed by American myths and tall tales. There’s a Western flair to many of the album’s songs with nods to soundtrack composers such as Morricone and the dream-laden noir of Badalamenti. Many of the album’s highlights maintain a ceremonial grace.

Due to reasons not worth delving into, this will be the last show produced and presented by The Other Side of Life for the immediate future, and possibly ever. We thank you for your support over the years, and we hope to see you at this fantastic show!

“Spend some time in Louisville, Kentucky and you will find it is one of the most unassumingly strange places in America. The ratio of grown folks to millennials in attendance at any rock gig seems roughly 3:1. Such events take place in places like caves and chicken coops, among other nontraditional venues. Hip, transgressive people don’t seem to outgrow hip, transgressive things here; no one seems very eager to settle for a life less weird. Catherine Irwin of the great Louisville/Chicago band Freakwater — who lends her inimitable vocal talents to several tunes on Fantasy Error, the latest album by STATE CHAMPION — once joked that the evergreen nature (no pun intended) of the Louisville scene was due to the dearth of area vocational schools. If an album has been made in this young century that better captures the essence of this burg than Fantasy Error, I haven’t heard it.

STATE CHAMPION‘s punked-up country gunk frequently recalls both the Aristotelian pathos of bands like Souled American and Palace Brothers and the character-driven black humor of indie ironists like Camper Van Beethoven and the Supreme Dicks. Mere homage, however, is not STATE CHAMPION‘s line. Singer and head honcho Ryan Davis is a sharp, astute lyricist, the kind of songwriter who probably gets tired of people asking him why he doesn’t try his hand at short story writing. Indeed, Fantasy Error‘s depictions of postmasters and county coroners, Dickensian drinkers and ‘teardrop pushers’ are as vivid as they are familiar, sung with the conviction of a Drag City-damaged Chris Knight. The musicians provide the perfect foil, loose without trying too terribly hard to appear ‘ramshackle.’ Frayed horsehair bows are dragged across fiddle wire and banjos frail for dear life; fuzzy, unfussy electric guitars bend, scrimmage, and howl while subtle synthesizers interject ominously through the din; even the percussion sounds bleary-eyed and broken-up with.

Fantasy Error is a great rock and roll record, equal parts Springsteen and noise scene, as American as broken traffic lights and bad trips.

The seven songs on NATHAN BOWLES‘ new album Nansemond deploy banjo, percussion, piano (his childhood instrument), tapes, and — for the first time — his robust voice to explore the rugged country between the poles of Appalachian old-time traditions and ecstatic, minimalist drone, moving effortlessly between composed sections, improvised passages, and field recordings. This forking-path approach follows his wide-ranging work as an ensemble player with the Black Twig Pickers (banjo, percussion), Pelt (struck and bowed percussion), Steve Gunn (drums, piano, banjo), Hiss Golden Messenger (banjo), Jack Rose, and others. For this record, he has assembled a sensitive group of collaborators from beyond the rosters of those groups: Tom Carter (guitar), Joe Dejarnette (guitar), Steve Kruger (fiddle, voice), and Jason Meagher of Black Dirt Studio (recording, production, mixing.)

JASON AJEMIAN has acquired a high profile in the improvised music scene over the years, performing with Marc Ribot’s SunShip, Matana Robert’s CoinCoin, Rob Mazurek’s Mandarin Movie, Exploding Star Orchestra, and Chicago Underground Trio, Ken Vandermark’s Crisis Ensemble, and his 5 year weekly engagement with Jeff Parker & Nori Tanaka at the Rodan in Chicago.  AJEMIAN’s curiosity has ranged far and wide — he’s just as comfortable in the hushed, folksy setting of Born Heller, his duo with Josephine Foster, as he is in the breath-processed arrangements of his large ensemble Who Cares How Long You Sink.  Given such a variety of musical interest, a detour like “From Beyond,” AJEMIAN’s backwards version of Black Sabbath’s ‘Into the Void’ for chamber ensemble, begins to seem like an obvious stop on this bassist’s journey from the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains to Chicago and his current home in New York City.

Louisville resident and drummer extraordinaire, the list of Tim Barnes‘s collaborators is too long to list here, but it includes Jim O’Rourke, Silver Jews, Neil Michael Hagerty and the Howling Hex, The Tower Recordings, and countless others. Most recently, Tim Barnes played drums with the newly resurrected lineup of The For Carnation, as well as with MV+EE at Cropped Out in November, 2011 and with Wooden Wand at Cropped Out, September, 2012.

Jim Marlowe and Jordan Richardson you know from their incredible all-over-the-place band Tropical Trash, as well as their reputations as improvisers about town with the likes of Sapat, Ecstatic Girth, and Jandek at Cropped Out in September, 2012.

Soldier of the Road is a documentary about saxophonist/clarinetist Peter Brötzmann, directed by Bernard Josse in collaboration with journalist and photographer Gérard Rouy, who has been following Brötzmann since the early 1970s. It looks at Brötzmann’s live performances and artwork, and takes in interviews and performances with Han Bennink, Evan Parker, Ken Vandermark, Mats Gustafsson, Joe McPhee, Michael Zerang, and many others. There will be two screenings of Soldier of the Road at the Louisville Film Society‘s Dreamland Film Center on Friday, February 15th at 7 PM and 9 PM. $8 general admission or $5 for Louisville Film Society members. ABOUT TOM CARTER:

While on a tour of Europe this spring with his band Charalambides, the Brooklyn based guitarist Tom Carter was hospitalized in Berlin, Germany for serious complications of pneumonia. In mid-July, Tom was transferred to a medical rehabilitation facility in Germany, near the Baltic Sea. Tom will receive medical care, monitoring and physical rehabilitation at the facility until the end of July. His doctors are also recommending that Tom not return to employment and normal levels of pre-illness activity until January 2013. This recommendation will be periodically reevaluated, but it seems to fall in line with common recovery projections for people who have experienced pneumonia at this level of seriousness. It is still unknown whether Tom will be able to return to New York immediately after the rehabilitation, or if it will be necessary for him to, instead, reside elsewhere with his family for a time. Although his condition continues to improve, Tom is still weak and his condition must come closer to what his normal baseline health will be, in order for doctors to assess what type of further treatment he will need in the US. It does seem to be certain that Tom will require follow up care once back in the States.

Tom Carter is a tremendous musician, and a caring, compassionate individual who will need long-term help to recover from his illness. Cropped Out, The Other Side of Life, and the musicians playing the benefit are joining forces with a number of promoters, musicians, and concerned friends of Tom all across the South to curate benefit shows during the middle of August. This unique situation of multiple forces across an entire region presents a rare opportunity to help a friend who has given us so much over the years — his music, friendship, and encouragement.

SHEDDING has been a solo vehicle for Connor Bell since 2001, and has released several items over those years available at Ocio and Hometapes. SHEDDING‘s music is meditative and still, eerie and unsettling — yet with a spectacular sense of melody.

R. KEENAN LAWLER is a musician and sound artist based in Louisville Kentucky. For over 25 years his musical journey has taken him from early experiments with reverb tanks, noise and tape decks to all manner of avant-garde, “new” music, psychedelia, electro-acoustic, drone, ethnic and sampler-based work. LAWLER is best known for developing a highly personal and exploratory language for the metal bodied resonator guitar which Baltimore’s John Berdnt called “Cosmic, monolithic and deeply American.” Primarily a solo performer, he is also known for collaborative work. His guitar playing is also heard on releases by Paul K., Jack Wright, My Morning Jacket and on Matmos’ The Civil War. He has collaborated or performed with a wide range of forward-thinking musicians and mavericks including Rhys Chatham, John Butcher, Eliott Sharp, Charalambides, Ignaz Schick/Perlonex, Kaffe Matthews, Burning Star Core, Jason Kahn, Ut Gret, Thaniel Ion Lee, Ed Wilcox, Ramesh Srinivasan, Kevin Drumm, Arco Flute Foundation, Helena Espvall, Ian Nagoski, Connor Bell, Andy Willis, Alan Licht, Taksuya Nakatani, Tom Carter, Bhob Rainey, Aaron Rosenblum, Joe Dutkiewicz, Evergreen, Eric Carbonara and Joseph Suchy.

PARLOUR originally began as a solo project from Tim Furnish following the mid-90s dissolution of CRAIN – the seminal Louisville rock group he co-founded in the late ’80s. Currently playing with new drummer (Greg Morris) and synth player (Brian Sweeney), Furnish’s PARLOUR evokes “A unique combination of interweaving guitar shards… driven by a dark, relentless rhythm section.” Their most recent album, Simulacrenfield (released on Temporary Residence), was one of our favorites of 2010.

WET is an electronic outfit comprised of three Louisville high schoolers (Hank Paradis, Evan Booker, and Jeff Bryant) who began playing in 2010. Together the group uses an array of electronic, acoustic, and self-made instruments to find humor in their common fears as young people — fears of excessiveness, ignorance, and estrangement that perhaps cannot be destroyed, but absorbed and released again in a series of musical elations. CROPPED OUT is coming up…

We haven’t had too much to say about the upcoming CROPPED OUT festival, on the weekend of November 11th – 13th here in lovely Louisville, Kentucky, because it seems like it’s all anybody can talk about anyway! I mean, can you believe freakin’ SCRATCH ACID is gonna play?* Me neither, and I’m really stoked!

But the CROPPED OUT fest is far more than just one band. It’s a whole mess of ’em! Including some of our favorite performers ever:

  • BILL ORCUTT, former guitarist for HARRY PUSSY, and one of the most exciting purveyors of six-string nonsense (even though he only plays four strings, apparently) going today.
  • MV + EE, the duo of Matt Valentine (formerly of THE TOWER RECORDINGS) and Erika Elder is probably the closest you’ll get to seeing Neil Young live, except perhaps even more damaged. And rumor has it that former TOWER RECORDINGS member TIM BARNES will be joining them!
  • MOUNT CARMEL is probably our favorite of the new SILTBREEZE roster — straight-ahead Ohio-style boogie rock!
  • HUMAN EYE might possibly be the best rock band in Detroit right now. Period.

And there’s a whole slew more, including lots of shit we’ve never heard of before! And a bevy of fantastic local artists, including our friends SAPAT, YOUNG WIDOWS, SHEDDING, COLISEUM, CROSS, and lots more!

*On a side note, how come nobody got it together to bring THE JESUS LIZARD to Louisville during their recent reunion action? Just because Laura Shine has no idea who they are doesn’t mean they weren’t one of the most popular Chicago-style bands to play in Louisville during the 1990s. Our excuse for not booking them is, well, we were too poor to afford their guarantee (as if our shoe-string show budget wasn’t obvious).

**Seriously Louisville, if you sleep on this like you slept on TERRASTOCK 2008, you only have yourself to blame. The prices are good, the venue is centrally located, and if you miss it…
