FAUN FABLES began in 1997, when Dawn ‘the faun’ McCarthy left the bands and cabarets of NYC for the wider world. She grew up in eastern Washington state enjoying drawing, dance, and make-believe amongst a large family. On Early Song (1999) she sang with “a voice as haunting as an abandoned coal mine, while it dances with the even tempo guitar that seems to pluck itself,” (CMJ). Mother Twilight (2001) was called “A collection of songs that seem to rove wondrously through the mountain pines at dusk,” (SF Weekly). Dawn performs FAUN FABLES most often as a soloist or with frequent collaborator Nils Frykdahl of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. But she also enjoys working with other artists, musical and otherwise; The Transit Rider, a FAUN FABLES full length musical inspired by her years in NYC, premiered 2002 in San Francisco with a cast of thirteen. FAUN FABLES tours the world regularly, studying landscape, culture and the art of feasting with locals.

partyknüllers

PARTY KNüLLERS is the experimental garage jazz duo of Fred Lonberg-Holm (cello, guitar, electronics) and Ståle Liavik Solberg (drums). The band was described by Eyal Hareuveni as “an intimate meeting of the two restless and adventurous musicians” with an “obsessive and playful need to explore and invent new sounds and new forms of musical communication”.
Colin Greene says: “[The] sound and phrasing of his cello frequently resemble guitarists such as Thurston Moore, rich in fragmented overtones, and can sound like a Harrier Jump Jet – taking off and landing” while “Solberg’s fractured percussive playing intensifies the tension.” Before setting out as a duo, they played together in VCDC (with reed player Frode Gjerstadt and vocalist Stine Janvin-Motland), Gorilla Ass Piano (with bassist Per Zanussi) as well as a number of other ad hoc groupings including sax/clarinet player Keefe Jackson. Since forming the PARTY KNüLLERS, they have also recorded and performed with analog synth wizard Jim Baker. Independently they have worked with a who’s who of underground (and mainstream) musics from Steve Beresford to Wilco, from to John Russell to Peter Brötzmann. Their low-fidelity approach to improvising and recording and their influences of dance music, garage rock, free jazz and European Free Improvised lends itself to a raw simplicity of composition, arrangement, and performance.

bonnie

The man who acts under the name Will Oldham and sings and composes under the name BONNIE “PRINCE” BILLY has, over the past quarter-century, made an idiosyncratic journey through, and an indelible mark on, the worlds of indie rock and independent cinema. With his highly individualistic approach to music making and the music industry, one that cherishes intimacy, community, mystery, and spontaneity; his brilliance has captivated fans and made Bonny one of our most influential and beloved songsmiths.

A pastoral suite of electronics, acoustic guitars, synthesizers and rhythm machine, Breslin is the latest work from FLANGER MAGAZINE, the duo of Chris Bush and Ben Zoeller, whose previous work in the group Caboladies serves as a touchstone. Imitation strings, electronic interruptions, and nylon acoustic guitar figures touched with reverb are the perennial players in this work.

KAL MARKS is a band from Boston, Massachusetts, not a single person. Though started in a bathroom as a solo recording project in 2006, it was always intended to one day become a band. The band consists of Nick Eggs, Michael Motorcycle and Carlton Banx. They’ve released a number of heralded releases on Exploding in Sound, Sophomore Lounge, and Midnight Werewolf Records.

IAN

IAN are a “dream-pop outfit” from Los Angeles, California who have recently relocated to Boston, Massachusetts. Led by Jillian Medford, they’ve released records on Blood Oath Slumber Party and Bufu. “The trio specializes in feedback-drenched, taut rock given a twist by Medford, whose girlish vocals manage to sound effervescent even when she’s singing of heartbreak.” – Maura Johnston, in the Boston Globe.

DRY SUMMERS are an AWESOME new Louisville band featuring members of Gangly Youth, The Photographic, Tiny Fights, and solo artist Shutaro Noguchi. They recently played their debut show at Kaiju with Tycoons of Teen and Invisible Things (from Chicago/Philly), and if you missed them that night, you don’t want to miss out this time!

Christopher Joseph Ward, better known as CJ RAMONE, is an American musician known as the bassist for punk rock group the Ramones from 1989 to 1996. Prior to joining the Ramones, Ward served in the United States Marine Corps. He was a fan of the Ramones, particularly of Dee Dee Ramone, before joining the band, and later played with him in a band called The Remains or The Ramainz, which was formed by Dee Dee Ramone, Marky Ramone and Dee Dee’s wife, Barbara Zampini (Barbara Ramone). He also played with Axe, Los Gusanos, and is currently playing in Bad Chopper. Christopher Joseph Ward (born October 8, 1965), better known as C. J. Ramone, is an American musician known as the bassist for punk rock group The Ramones from 1989 to 1996. CJ RAMONE replaced original band member Dee Dee Ramone, though Dee Dee continued to write songs for the group. His first show with the Ramones was on September 30, 1989, in Leicester, England, and he played with the band until they retired on August 6, 1996.

shonenknife

Osaka, Japan’s SHONEN KNIFE, the legendary female pop/punk trio continues celebrating their 30th Anniversary as the most internationally recognizable name in Japanese punk rock with another amazing collection of songs about life, fantasy and food.

When it comes to the subject of rock and roll, DEAD HALOS doesn’t claim to be re-inventors of the proverbial wheel, nor do they wish to live exclusively in the so-called glory days of years past. The Louisville, Kentucky-based band, which includes Tony Ash (Trophy Wives) on guitar, Aaron Sortman (Waxeater, Neighbor) on drums, Max Balliet (The Ladybirds) on guitar, Cassie Green on bass and Kenosha, Wisconsin’s Stephanie Vogt (Donoma) on vocals, is here to be heard, loud and proud, whether you approve or not. The band’s musical influences are displayed proudly on their collective sleeves, but make no mistake, this is no half-assed nostalgia act or pleasant stroll down memory lane. DEAD HALOS are doing their goddamndest to revitalize the spirit and sound of real rock and roll music, the kind we all grew up loving until, like so many things before, it became a watered down parody of itself. Come one come all. Bring your party hat, your dancing shoes….and maybe some earplugs.

THE PINK VULTURES succinctly describe themselves as “American Punk Rock n’ Roll.” What more needs to be said? Nothing, really, other than their members — Daryl Sullivan, Chris Payne, Brent Starkey, Karri Bedan, and Ella Jean Lumpkins — are an assortment of long-time scene veterans and relatively fresh faces. But they’ll let their music speak for themselves!

FRED THOMAS is a Michigan-born songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who’s been at it forever. Starting out as a teenager in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti noise scene in the early 90’s, the guy just kinda started jamming and never stopped. Dedicating the past two decades to various projects, Fred’s output has always been wildly varied and constantly changing. Best known for work as a “brainchild” sort of bandleader with the experimental pop sounds of Saturday Looks Good To Me, Thomas has also made significant noise and traveled the world on a seemingly endless string of tours with the washed-out physche of City Center, reverby surf punkers Swimsuit and the internal gentle pop duo MIghty Clouds with former SLGTM singer Betty Barnes. Compulsively playing in bands, running small-scale labels and doing shows on a non-stop basis would make a comprehensive list of related projects a little exhausting, but it’s safe to say there’s always gonna be something homespun, beautiful and a little weird if Fred is involved. So all of this brings us to All Are Saved, technically the eighth FRED THOMAS solo album, but the first one many people will get a chance to hear. Painstakingly assembled between Detroit, Michigan and Athens, Georgia, the album features mixing assistance from Drew Vandenburg (of Montreal, Deerhunter) and guest spots from friends in bands like People Get Ready, Radiator Hospital, Known Moons and even a guest backing vocal cameo from Andrew W.K.

BOOKSHELF is a band currently residing in Louisville, Kentucky, planet Earth, Milky Way Galaxy… Find out more at http://www.bkshlf.net.

Coliseum

Founded by Louisville musician Ryan Patterson and including Kayhan Vaziri and Carter Wilson, power trio COLISEUM have grown to become one of today’s quintessential contemporary punk bands. Successfully melding progressive musicianship, hardcore fervor, and vital social awareness into one constantly evolving artistic vision. Over the last decade COLISEUM have released music on a host of labels including; Temporary Residence, Relapse, Level Plane, Auxiliary (Ryan’s own label), and Deathwish. Anxiety’s Kiss is the new album from COLISEUM, recorded at The Magpie Cage by producer/engineer J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines). Anxiety’s Kiss is a hook-laden maturation of the COLISEUM sound. Nods to their early D-Beat leanings are there, but it is their willingness to embrace Post-Punk melody and explore the space between notes that make Anxiety’s Kiss so alluring. Confidently growing within the punk world, without ever leaving it behind. A flawless, yin and yang pairing that is Coliseum at the peak of their experimental and anthemic powers.

youngwidows

Louisville’s creatively restless dark-rock auteurs YOUNG WIDOWS feature guitars that are enormous, drums that are pummeling, and trademark gut-churning bass that is more jaw-dropping than ever. Disregarding all boundaries and pushing forward with a masterful command of post-punk, noise rock, pseudo industrial, experimental doom, and goth, YOUNG WIDOWS emit the intimidating force of a 10-piece with the heart and soul of a classic power trio.

ChildBite

CHILD BITE is a Detroit-based punk/metal/noise rock band formed in 2005. Currently signed to Phil Anselmo’s Housecore Records as well as Indianapolis-based Joyful Noise Recordings, their music consists of atonal guitar melodies, distorted bass, frequent rhythmic shifts, and frenzied, howling vocals. Their most easily identifiable influences include ’80s hardcore (Black Flag, Dead Kennedys) and ’90s alternative (The Jesus Lizard, Faith No More). Their sound has been described as “enormous and predatory, from the baleful rhythm section to Shawn Knight’s [frightening vocals]” (Fine Print Mag, 2013). CHILD BITE has over a dozen releases of varying lengths, including a triple split 7″ with David Yow & Thurston Moore, as well as a 5″ EP of Anal Cunt songs featuring Phil Anselmo on vocals.

EXACTA CUBE is the electronic improvisational vehicle of Introvert (www.soundcloud.com/introvertmusic) and Nicholas Daniel (www.soundcloud.com/gigasturtz). Intricate textures mashed with complex and evolving rhythms, their debut cassette last year was the first release on the new, Louisville-based City State Tapes label (www.facebook.com/citystatetapes).

PARLOUR originally began as a solo project from Tim Furnish following the mid-90s dissolution of Crain – the seminal Louisville rock group he co-founded in the late ’80s. PARLOUR evokes “A unique combination of interweaving guitar shards… driven by a dark, relentless rhythm section.” Their most recent album, Simulacrenfield (released on Temporary Residence), was one of our favorites of 2010 and an instant classic.

newmother

NEW MOTHER NATURE is a relatively new band on the Louisville scene, but filled with familiar faces. Members of NEW MOTHER NATURE are current or former members of Old Baby, The Phantom Family Halo, Natural Geographic, and many more. They quickly became one of our favorite Louisville bands, and we think you’ll like ‘em as well. Their sound “is rich with straight-forward melodies… all while maintaining a sense of playful, if cautious experimentation.” — Syd Bishop, LEO Weekly.

Visiting Nurse Live

Comprised of electronic drums, keyboards, bass, and effected guitar, VISITING NURSE features long time collaborators Jon Hill, Mike Seymour, and Syd Bishop creating music that seems to somehow straddle the gap between the organic and inorganic, a cyborg pastiche of jazz influenced composition, and rigid structures. For fans of Boards of Canada, Clams Casino, and Biosphere.

R. RING is Kelley Deal & Mike Montgomery. It is voices, guitars and keys. It is sparse, chaotic, abrasive and lulling, often within the same song.

thefervor

THE FERVOR offers a rare example of truth in advertising. With intensity and passion, THE FERVOR adopt the best of rock and roll troubadour tropes and synthesize them into a pastiche that feels unique and familiar, all while seamlessly fitting into the narrative of their native Louisville’s rich musical culture. With husky vocals delivered in a distinct and seductive tone, THE FERVOR‘s Natalie Felker paints mystical, dreamlike imagery. No Depression called her “the Karen Carpenter of indie rock.” Alongside Natalie’s radiant vocals and shimmering keys, the band cultivates hypnotic atmospheres that stomp and crash toward listener-rewarding apexes.

shiveringtimbers

SHIVERING TIMBERS have been honing their considerable craft on relentless tour stops with Shovels & Rope, Jessica Lea Mayfield, The Chapin Sisters, and so many more, resulting in a live presence that combines rock energy, blues/punk passion, and country/gospel reflection.

quailbones

QUAILBONES is a five-piece garage rock band from the disoriented streets of the friendliest small-town in America: Murray, Kentucky. Their debut album will be released this summer on Karmic Swamp.
