Yes. That WIRE. The seminal English band that influenced everyone from the Minutemen to My Bloody Valentine, from R.E.M. to Minor Threat. From their 1977 debut album Pink Flag to the band’s most recent album, 2013’s Change Becomes Us, legendary art-combo WIRE have created a unique body of work. Subverting genres, Colin Newman, Graham Lewis, Robert Grey and Matthew Simms continue to work on new material, regularly confounding expectations. The Louisville stop on their summer tour will be their only appearance in the region, as well as their first time playing anywhere in Kentucky. If you’re at all a fan of music in the post-punk era, you won’t want to miss this!

NATIVES are a catchy, tough, psychedelic punk band from Louisville, KY. This is their second show with a new, powerful lineup. You can listen to their self-released debut from 2011, Loose Secrets, here: http://ntvs.bandcamp.com/.

FAUN FABLES front woman Dawn McCarthy is a renaissance lady who enjoys singing, theater, folklore, dancing, traveling, nature and studies of the hearth and food history. Her performing background was forged in oral tradition amidst a large musical family in Spokane, Washington and continued with studies in music theater, rock bands, Action Theater, Polish theater and ethnomusicology. Her most recent release is What the Brothers Sang, a collection of songs made famous by the Everly Brothers, in collaboration with Bonnie “Prince” Billy (aka Will Oldham). Together with Nils Frykdahl, they form the core of FAUN FABLES.

WEI ZHONGLE is a band from Carbondale, Illinois whose “engaging but challenging music derives from many eastern and world influences, including Gamelan styles of Indonesia as well as African and Chinese orchestral music, fused with lyrics filled with nonlinear thoughts.” — Carbondale Rocks.

HELADO NEGRO and SHEDDING at ZANZABAR, Sunday, March 10th

Astro Black Records and The Other Side of Life present:

HELADO NEGRO (Savannah, GA; on Asthmatic Kitty)

with

SHEDDING (Louisville, KY)

Sunday, March 10th
at ZANZABAR
2100 S. Preston
9 PM doors, 21-and-over
$6 advance tickets available online here: http://zanzabarlouisville.ticketfly.com/event/233583-helado-negro-louisville/; $8 day-of-show

The son of Ecuadorean immigrants, HELADO NEGRO was born in South Florida in 1980. His childhood was suffused with tropical heat, humidity, hurricanes, all refracted with the rich sounds and colors of the various Latin American cultures of southern Florida. Pounding bass beats from passing cars, boom boxes bouncing down the block, and late-night parties called “peñas” provided a foundation for HELADO NEGRO’s interest in sound and lifelong quest to discover the unlimited variety of objects used to produce music. HELADO NEGRO has worked with Bear in Heaven mixing their Pitchfork’s Best New Music album Beast Rest Forth Mouth.  He also produced Prefuse 73‘s 2010 album Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian. His new album, Invisible Life, will be released on March 5th, 2013 by Asthmatic Kitty.  Tones whittled out of these places, memories, time and all its impressions, Invisible Life is HELADO NEGRO‘s third full-length album. Singing in English for the first time, as well as Spanish, HELADO NEGRO is assisted by collaborators including Bear in Heaven’s Jon Philpot, Mouse on Mars’ Jan St. Werner, Devendra Barnhart, Matt Crum and Eduardo Alonso. In the way of artists like Caetano Veloso, The Sea and Cake, and even Sade, HELADO NEGRO floats beyond his own identity into that democratic forest of shape and color.

Watch the video for HELADO NEGRO‘s “Dance Ghost” from Asthmatic Kitty on Vimeo.

SHEDDING has been a solo vehicle for Connor Bell since 2001, and has released several items over those years available at Ocio and Hometapes. SHEDDING‘s music is meditative and still, eerie and unsettling — yet with a spectacular sense of melody.

ANWAR SADAT “sound totally Boston circa 1982: aggressively shouted vocals, aggressive rhythms, jaggedly distorted guitars and just enough melody above the noise to make them catchy as hell.” – New York Music Daily. This is ANWAR SADAT‘s debut full length record (which will be available on 12″ vinyl) and follow up to their 2012 EP Mutilation. They will be leaving for a two week tour shortly thereafter. JASON AJEMIAN and special guests at the NACHBAR, Friday, February 15th, FREE!

Astro Black Records, Cropped Out, and the Other Side of Life present a FREE after-party for the Louisville Film Society‘s screenings of Soldier of the Road, featuring

JASON AJEMIAN (bassist; Chicago, Illinois)

with special guests:

TIM BARNES (percussion)
JIM MARLOWE (saxophones; member of SAPAT and TROPICAL TRASH)
JORDAN RICHARDSON (percussion; member of TROPICAL TRASH)

and more Louisville musicians to be announced!

Friday, February 15th
at NACHBAR
969 Charles Street (at the corner of Charles and Krieger)
11 PM, 21-and -over
FREE!

JASON AJEMIAN has acquired a high profile in the improvised music scene over the years, performing with Marc Ribot’s SunShip, Matana Robert’s CoinCoin, Rob Mazurek’s Mandarin Movie, Exploding Star Orchestra, and Chicago Underground Trio, Ken Vandermark’s Crisis Ensemble, and his 5 year weekly engagement with Jeff Parker & Nori Tanaka at the Rodan in Chicago.  AJEMIAN’s curiosity has ranged far and wide — he’s just as comfortable in the hushed, folksy setting of Born Heller, his duo with Josephine Foster, as he is in the breath-processed arrangements of his large ensemble Who Cares How Long You Sink.  Given such a variety of musical interest, a detour like “From Beyond,” AJEMIAN’s backwards version of Black Sabbath’s ‘Into the Void’ for chamber ensemble, begins to seem like an obvious stop on this bassist’s journey from the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains to Chicago and his current home in New York City.

Louisville resident and drummer extraordinaire, the list of Tim Barnes‘s collaborators is too long to list here, but it includes Jim O’Rourke, Silver Jews, Neil Michael Hagerty and the Howling Hex, The Tower Recordings, and countless others. Most recently, Tim Barnes played drums with the newly resurrected lineup of The For Carnation, as well as with MV+EE at Cropped Out in November, 2011 and with Wooden Wand at Cropped Out, September, 2012.

Jim Marlowe and Jordan Richardson you know from their incredible all-over-the-place band Tropical Trash, as well as their reputations as improvisers about town with the likes of Sapat, Ecstatic Girth, and Jandek at Cropped Out in September, 2012.

Soldier of the Road is a documentary about saxophonist/clarinetist Peter Brötzmann, directed by Bernard Josse in collaboration with journalist and photographer Gérard Rouy, who has been following Brötzmann since the early 1970s. It looks at Brötzmann’s live performances and artwork, and takes in interviews and performances with Han Bennink, Evan Parker, Ken Vandermark, Mats Gustafsson, Joe McPhee, Michael Zerang, and many others. There will be two screenings of Soldier of the Road at the Louisville Film Society‘s Dreamland Film Center on Friday, February 15th at 7 PM and 9 PM. $8 general admission or $5 for Louisville Film Society members. Sponsored by Astro Black Records.

DANIEL HIGGS and TROTTER/RILES at QUILL’S, Thursday, November 29th

Astro Black Records, Cropped Out and The Other Side of Life are proud to present:

DANIEL HIGGS (Baltimore, Maryland)

with special guests

TROTTER/RILES (Louisville, Kentucky)

Thursday, November 29th
at QUILL’S
930 Baxter Avenue
10 PM, $6, ALL AGES!

DANIEL HIGGS is a musician and artist from Baltimore, Maryland on whose behalf superlatives are destined to fail. It’s not that his artistic output – spanning three decades, numerous albums, books of poetry and collections of drawings – simply eludes classification, it defies it. Often we hear that a true work of art is meant to speak for itself, and with the work of DANIEL HIGGS the maxim rings truer than ever. His art is of the cosmos, we on Earth merely lucky that it happens to be confined to our atmosphere, in our lifetime. HIGGS is known primarily for his work as the sole lyricist and frontman of the band LUNGFISH, a four-piece dedicated to charting, in this listener’s estimation, nothing short of the evolution of all species, known and unknown. That the band has undertaken this pursuit in the guise of a humble rock outfit, in the absence of any public relations fanfare, metanarrative, or manifesto has been enough to endear them to tens of thousands. They are enshrined as one of America’s last true folk bands, and HIGGS anointed as a patron saint to artistic purity.

TROTTER/RILES is the duo of Tyler Trotter and Zak Riles. Both have been active within the Louisville music scene, and in the greater world, as musicians, promoters, sound engineers, and enthusiasts. Riles is best known as a member of the Temporary Residence Ltd. band GRAILS, while Trotter has performed with the PHANTOM FAMILY HALO, and was the longtime sound man for the CALIFORNIA GUITAR TRIO. This show marks their second-ever Louisville show, and third show total, coming after their debut with Maserati at Zanzabar and with OM and Daniel Higgs in Bloomington, Indiana.

FREE HALLOWEEN PARTY with DAUGHN GIBSON and STATE CHAMPION at the NACHBAR!

Astro Black Records, Cropped Out and The Other Side of Life are proud to present:

A FREE HALLOWEEN PARTY!

with

DAUGHN GIBSON (Carslile, PA; on Sub Pop)

and

STATE CHAMPION (from Louisville/Southern Indiana/Chicago, on Sophomore Lounge Records)

Wednesday, October 31st
at NACHBAR
969 Charles Street (at the corner of Charles and Krieger)
9 PM, 21-and -over
FREE!

DAUGHN GIBSON hails from the Cumberland Valley town of Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The charismatic crooner and sound sculptor’s music sets his subversively witty and colorful tales against an engaging blend of electronic, country and blues. GIBSON’s spirited, DIY approach is informed by his time spent playing in punk and metal bands and stints as a cross-country truck driver. His deep baritone adds to the allure, which posits the handsome balladeer in territory explored by the greats. He’s earned comparisons to the likes of Lee Hazelwood, Scott Walker and Arthur Russell, and contemporary artists like Nicolas Jaar, Magnetic Fields and James Blake. DAUGHN GIBSON’s music first caught the attention of Philadelphia-based indie label White Denim (run by Sub Pop label mate and Pissed Jeans member Matt Korvette), who immediately agreed to release DG’s debut, All Hell, in April 2012. In June of 2012, Dull Knife Records released the 7″ single “Lite Me Up” b/w “The Mark of a Man.” DAUGHN GIBSON’s All Hell won praise from the likes of Pitchfork, SPIN, FILTER, Austin Chronicle, Baltimore City Paper, Philadelphia Weekly, San Francisco Bay Guardian, Brooklyn Vegan, Tiny Mix Tapes, The Needle Drop, and more.

Listen to “Reach Into the Fire” by Daughn Gibson here: http://assets2.subpop.com/assets/audio/12237.mp3.

STATE CHAMPION started in 2006 as a moniker for the early acoustic experiments of Ryan Davis. It has since evolved into a rock n’ roll band with a Chevy van and not one, but two vinyl records. Their sophomore record, Deep Shit, was released earlier this year on Sophomore Lounge Records, and has received quite a level of acclaim. Because it’s awesome! Welcome them back to Louisville for their first show since last Spring.

SIMON JOYNER, BRO. STEPHEN, and TENDER MERCY at QUILL’S, Sunday, November 11th

Astro Black Records, Cropped Out and The Other Side of Life are proud to present:

SIMON JOYNER (Omaha, Nebraska; on Sing, Eunuchs!)
BRO. STEPHEN (Louisville, KY; on Crossroads of America Records)
TENDER MERCY (Louisville, KY; on Dunkenstein Records)

Sunday, November 11th
at QUILL’S
930 Baxter Avenue
8 PM, $6, ALL AGES!

Love and death: these are the only themes. So it’s been in SIMON JOYNER’s twenty years of making records—from 1992’s Umbilical Chords cassette to his new double LP, Ghosts. Over the course of a thirteen-album career in which he’s produced a multitude of sounds and musical influences on a multitude of independent labels, he’s only made two other proper double-albums (1997’s Yesterday, Tomorrow and In Between and 2001’s Hotel Lives). Both are classics of his discography, and Ghosts follows in their footsteps, creating and inhabiting a world in which JOYNER’s thematic preoccupations can be explored carefully and fully.  Recorded on reel-to-reel in JOYNER’s warehouse on a sixteen-track tape machine over many months, Ghosts sounds unlike any JOYNER record. The influence of dark, ’60s and ’70s private-press psych and folk records, as well as the noisy, transcendent music of New Zealand heroes like This Kind of Punishment, Alastair Galbraith and The Dead C are highlighted on this experimental, full-band song-cycle that pays subtle as well as brazen homage to several influential double-albums (perhaps most obviously with its Exile on Main Street-inspired gatefold artwork). JOYNER’s music gathers acolytes rather than casual fans, contributing to his “songwriter’s songwriter” status and inspiring comparisons to other artists like Bill Fay, Townes Van Zandt, David Blue, and Leonard Cohen.

BRO. STEPHEN is a project of Scott Kirkpatrick who is also the force behind indie-rock band Chemic. Originally conceived as a songwriting exercise, BRO. STEPHEN has come to mean much more. Pulling from a childhood of being a preacher’s son, a deep collection of poor decisions, and a constant struggle with narcolepsy, the songs of BRO. STEPHEN are a casual dart game: the sound of ennui. Despite it’s relatively recent inception, BRO. STEPHEN headed out on the road in 2009 on a national tour playing songs off of his upcoming debut record and armed with hand-made copies of The Front Room EP which was a collection of demos Kirkpatrick had recorded on a cassette tape machine. Along the way BRO. STEPHEN has supported acts like The Fiery Furnaces, Sun Kil Moon, Anni Rossi, DM Stith, The Daredevil Christopher Wright, and Vandaveer, and released its debut album Baptist Girls, a record that was largely recorded on an old farm in Northern Indiana.

TENDER MERCY is the brainchild of singer/songwriter Mark Kramer and can best be described as contemporary minimalism with strong acoustic leanings. Debuting with a track on the infamous Dunkenstein Record’s Doctors Of Dunk Vol. 2, TENDER MERCY began playing around Louisville, opening for the likes of Jamie Barnes, Tamara Dearing, The Deloreans, Ben Traughber, The Parade Schedule, and Nerves Jr. TENDER MERCY released a 6 song EP entitled “The Road To Good Intention Is Paved With Hell” in the spring of 2012.
