Founded by Louisville musician Ryan Patterson and including Kayhan Vaziri and Carter Wilson, power trio COLISEUM have grown to become one of today’s quintessential contemporary punk bands. Successfully melding progressive musicianship, hardcore fervor, and vital social awareness into one constantly evolving artistic vision. Over the last decade COLISEUM have released music on a host of labels including; Temporary Residence, Relapse, Level Plane, Auxiliary (Ryan’s own label), and Deathwish. Anxiety’s Kiss is the new album from COLISEUM, recorded at The Magpie Cage by producer/engineer J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines). Anxiety’s Kiss is a hook-laden maturation of the COLISEUM sound. Nods to their early D-Beat leanings are there, but it is their willingness to embrace Post-Punk melody and explore the space between notes that make Anxiety’s Kiss so alluring. Confidently growing within the punk world, without ever leaving it behind. A flawless, yin and yang pairing that is Coliseum at the peak of their experimental and anthemic powers.

Louisville’s creatively restless dark-rock auteurs YOUNG WIDOWS feature guitars that are enormous, drums that are pummeling, and trademark gut-churning bass that is more jaw-dropping than ever. Disregarding all boundaries and pushing forward with a masterful command of post-punk, noise rock, pseudo industrial, experimental doom, and goth, YOUNG WIDOWS emit the intimidating force of a 10-piece with the heart and soul of a classic power trio.

CHILD BITE is a Detroit-based punk/metal/noise rock band formed in 2005. Currently signed to Phil Anselmo’s Housecore Records as well as Indianapolis-based Joyful Noise Recordings, their music consists of atonal guitar melodies, distorted bass, frequent rhythmic shifts, and frenzied, howling vocals. Their most easily identifiable influences include ’80s hardcore (Black Flag, Dead Kennedys) and ’90s alternative (The Jesus Lizard, Faith No More). Their sound has been described as “enormous and predatory, from the baleful rhythm section to Shawn Knight’s [frightening vocals]” (Fine Print Mag, 2013). CHILD BITE has over a dozen releases of varying lengths, including a triple split 7″ with David Yow & Thurston Moore, as well as a 5″ EP of Anal Cunt songs featuring Phil Anselmo on vocals.

EXACTA CUBE is the electronic improvisational vehicle of Introvert (www.soundcloud.com/introvertmusic) and Nicholas Daniel (www.soundcloud.com/gigasturtz). Intricate textures mashed with complex and evolving rhythms, their debut cassette last year was the first release on the new, Louisville-based City State Tapes label (www.facebook.com/citystatetapes).

“Spend some time in Louisville, Kentucky and you will find it is one of the most unassumingly strange places in America. The ratio of grown folks to millennials in attendance at any rock gig seems roughly 3:1. Such events take place in places like caves and chicken coops, among other nontraditional venues. Hip, transgressive people don’t seem to outgrow hip, transgressive things here; no one seems very eager to settle for a life less weird. Catherine Irwin of the great Louisville/Chicago band Freakwater — who lends her inimitable vocal talents to several tunes on Fantasy Error, the latest album by STATE CHAMPION — once joked that the evergreen nature (no pun intended) of the Louisville scene was due to the dearth of area vocational schools. If an album has been made in this young century that better captures the essence of this burg than Fantasy Error, I haven’t heard it.

STATE CHAMPION‘s punked-up country gunk frequently recalls both the Aristotelian pathos of bands like Souled American and Palace Brothers and the character-driven black humor of indie ironists like Camper Van Beethoven and the Supreme Dicks. Mere homage, however, is not STATE CHAMPION‘s line. Singer and head honcho Ryan Davis is a sharp, astute lyricist, the kind of songwriter who probably gets tired of people asking him why he doesn’t try his hand at short story writing. Indeed, Fantasy Error‘s depictions of postmasters and county coroners, Dickensian drinkers and ‘teardrop pushers’ are as vivid as they are familiar, sung with the conviction of a Drag City-damaged Chris Knight. The musicians provide the perfect foil, loose without trying too terribly hard to appear ‘ramshackle.’ Frayed horsehair bows are dragged across fiddle wire and banjos frail for dear life; fuzzy, unfussy electric guitars bend, scrimmage, and howl while subtle synthesizers interject ominously through the din; even the percussion sounds bleary-eyed and broken-up with.

Fantasy Error is a great rock and roll record, equal parts Springsteen and noise scene, as American as broken traffic lights and bad trips.

“The banner yet waves!”

Spawned from the formidable Louisville, Kentucky collective known as Black Velvet Fuckere, SAPAT resides as the centrifugal force in this Midwestern psychedelic madrigal set in the psychosexual backwaters of the mighty Ohio River. For the entirety of the ‘00 decade, members have kept busy collaborating with and/or massaging the egos of various and sundry avant-pontiffs such as Robert Fripp, Magik Markers, Dead Child and Eugene Chadbourne – when not honing the orgone energy of SAPAT. Their most recent LP, A Posthuman Guide to the Advent Calendar Origins of the Peep Show, was released last fall on Sophomore Lounge Records.

Origins of the Peep Show, on Sophomore Lounge Records!

Limbo as the space between heaven and hell where unblessed babies float, sighing; limbo as the supple-spined Calypsonian dance craze: here exists The Immoralist, the new record by ELISA AMBROGIO. The Immoralist lies at the wicked crossroads of Wilson Pickett’s electric wail and the sweetest of Wilson Phillips harmonies.

Watch the video for ELISA AMBROGIO‘s “Superstitious” here:

The seven songs on NATHAN BOWLES‘ new album Nansemond deploy banjo, percussion, piano (his childhood instrument), tapes, and — for the first time — his robust voice to explore the rugged country between the poles of Appalachian old-time traditions and ecstatic, minimalist drone, moving effortlessly between composed sections, improvised passages, and field recordings. This forking-path approach follows his wide-ranging work as an ensemble player with the Black Twig Pickers (banjo, percussion), Pelt (struck and bowed percussion), Steve Gunn (drums, piano, banjo), Hiss Golden Messenger (banjo), Jack Rose, and others. For this record, he has assembled a sensitive group of collaborators from beyond the rosters of those groups: Tom Carter (guitar), Joe Dejarnette (guitar), Steve Kruger (fiddle, voice), and Jason Meagher of Black Dirt Studio (recording, production, mixing.)

Watch NATHAN BOWLES play “Sleepy Lake Tire Swing” here:

CHAMPION ZOZ is the duo of Ryan Davis (State Champion, Tropical Trash) and MA Turner (MA Turner’s Fatubyfairfe, Cross, Salad Influence, Warmer Milks), here making their Louisville debut on their debut tour! What soulful tunes will this wild-n’-wooly duo produce? Step to it, get to the show early, and find out!

D Arkestra still frame

D’ARKESTRA is a nonet that plays an amalgamation of post-rock and indie-jazz. The music  is often cinematic, characterized by odd metered grooves, juxtaposed sections, tight horn lines, improvisation and resonant melodies. Leader, songwriter and saxophonist Drew Miller has a growing resume that includes performances and/or recordings with Spoon, Wanda Jackson, Lucky Pineapple, Another 7 Astronauts, Scott Carney/Wax Fang, Cheyenne Mize, 23 String Band, The Ladybirds, Junk Yard Dogs and appearances with a slew of other Louisville and regional artists. The group formed in early 2012 and was initially an instrumental ensemble. When recording their first record Ghost Town in June, 2012, they solicited the help of songstress Dane Waters to contribute vocals on a few songs. The vocals added such a balance to the sound they sought out someone who could join on a permanent basis. After another year of writing, recording and playing shows Drew and D’ARKESTRA have produced another adventurous and honest record called Little Voices. This show will be the official party for Little Voices‘ release!

SHUTARO NOGUCHI is from Japan and in 2010 he moved to Louisville, Kentucky after finishing his college degree and internship at FAME studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.  He quickly found musical outlets as a collaborator with  K Tranza and Another 7 Astronauts. From 2013 he started recording his own songs and is currently working on a solo album, while hosting the radio program Midnight Locker with Nathan Simmons at ART.FM. His style of music varies but generally is melody-oriented, minimal acoustic guitar singer-songwriting sung in Japanese with a flavor of traditional-folk, backed by ensembles of synth and electric guitar. He is influenced by music from America and around the world, and Pajo.

Celebrating their 10th year as one of independent music’s most substantive bands, Louisville’s COLISEUM return with their fourth full-length, the stunning Sister Faith, to be released on April 30 on Temporary Residence Ltd. Expanding on the anthemic direction the trio veered toward on 2010’s highly acclaimed House With a Curse, Sister Faith‘s 13 songs are the most dynamic and immediately captivating of the band’s career, bristling with galvanizing melodies at the collision point between punk and noise-rock. The first album to be recorded in producer J. Robbins’ recently relocated Magpie Cage Studios, Sister Faith is also the first Coliseum recording to feature new bassist, Kayhan Vaziri, in addition to contributions from some of the groups’ closest friends and musical peers: Wata of Boris, J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines), Jason Farrell (Swiz, Bluetip), Elizabeth Elmore (Sarge, The Reputation), Chris Colohan (Burning Love, Cursed), Sam James Velde (Night Horse, Bluebird), and Jason Loewenstein (Sebadoh, The Fiery Furnaces) all make small but memorable contributions.

ANWAR SADAT “sound totally Boston circa 1982: aggressively shouted vocals, aggressive rhythms, jaggedly distorted guitars and just enough melody above the noise to make them catchy as hell.” – New York Music Daily. ANWAR SADAT recently finished a tour of the East Coast in support of their debut album Gold, which was released on vinyl this spring by Sophomore Lounge.

TROPICAL TRASH have caused quite a stir with their debut 7″, Fear of Suffering, on Sophomore Lounge. Still Single describes TROPICAL TRASH as an “Excellent combination of thrashing energy and solid ideas that break apart and recombine in novel, tuneful ways.” They’re just as thrilling live as on record, so don’t miss this opportunity to rock out with ‘em!
