“Spend some time in Louisville, Kentucky and you will find it is one of the most unassumingly strange places in America. The ratio of grown folks to millennials in attendance at any rock gig seems roughly 3:1. Such events take place in places like caves and chicken coops, among other nontraditional venues. Hip, transgressive people don’t seem to outgrow hip, transgressive things here; no one seems very eager to settle for a life less weird. Catherine Irwin of the great Louisville/Chicago band Freakwater — who lends her inimitable vocal talents to several tunes on Fantasy Error, the latest album by STATE CHAMPION — once joked that the evergreen nature (no pun intended) of the Louisville scene was due to the dearth of area vocational schools. If an album has been made in this young century that better captures the essence of this burg than Fantasy Error, I haven’t heard it.

STATE CHAMPION‘s punked-up country gunk frequently recalls both the Aristotelian pathos of bands like Souled American and Palace Brothers and the character-driven black humor of indie ironists like Camper Van Beethoven and the Supreme Dicks. Mere homage, however, is not STATE CHAMPION‘s line. Singer and head honcho Ryan Davis is a sharp, astute lyricist, the kind of songwriter who probably gets tired of people asking him why he doesn’t try his hand at short story writing. Indeed, Fantasy Error‘s depictions of postmasters and county coroners, Dickensian drinkers and ‘teardrop pushers’ are as vivid as they are familiar, sung with the conviction of a Drag City-damaged Chris Knight. The musicians provide the perfect foil, loose without trying too terribly hard to appear ‘ramshackle.’ Frayed horsehair bows are dragged across fiddle wire and banjos frail for dear life; fuzzy, unfussy electric guitars bend, scrimmage, and howl while subtle synthesizers interject ominously through the din; even the percussion sounds bleary-eyed and broken-up with.

Fantasy Error is a great rock and roll record, equal parts Springsteen and noise scene, as American as broken traffic lights and bad trips.

“The banner yet waves!”

For the entirety of the ‘00 decade, members have kept busy collaborating with and/or massaging the egos of various and sundry avant-pontiffs such as Robert Fripp, Magik Markers, Dead Child and Eugene Chadbourne – when not honing the orgone energy of SAPAT. Spawned from the formidable Louisville, KY collective known as Black Velvet Fuckere, SAPAT resides as the centrifugal force in this Midwestern psychedelic madrigal set in the psychosexual backwaters of the mighty Ohio River.

This show celebrates the release of their new LP, A Posthuman Guide to the Advent Calendar
Origins of the Peep Show, on Sophomore Lounge Records!

Limbo as the space between heaven and hell where unblessed babies float, sighing; limbo as the supple-spined Calypsonian dance craze: here exists The Immoralist, the new record by ELISA AMBROGIO. The Immoralist lies at the wicked crossroads of Wilson Pickett’s electric wail and the sweetest of Wilson Phillips harmonies.

Watch the video for ELISA AMBROGIO‘s “Superstitious” here:

The seven songs on NATHAN BOWLES‘ new album Nansemond deploy banjo, percussion, piano (his childhood instrument), tapes, and — for the first time — his robust voice to explore the rugged country between the poles of Appalachian old-time traditions and ecstatic, minimalist drone, moving effortlessly between composed sections, improvised passages, and field recordings. This forking-path approach follows his wide-ranging work as an ensemble player with the Black Twig Pickers (banjo, percussion), Pelt (struck and bowed percussion), Steve Gunn (drums, piano, banjo), Hiss Golden Messenger (banjo), Jack Rose, and others. For this record, he has assembled a sensitive group of collaborators from beyond the rosters of those groups: Tom Carter (guitar), Joe Dejarnette (guitar), Steve Kruger (fiddle, voice), and Jason Meagher of Black Dirt Studio (recording, production, mixing.)

Watch NATHAN BOWLES play “Sleepy Lake Tire Swing” here:

CHAMPION ZOZ is the duo of Ryan Davis (State Champion, Tropical Trash) and MA Turner (MA Turner’s Fatubyfairfe, Cross, Salad Influence, Warmer Milks), here making their Louisville debut on their debut tour! What soulful tunes will this wild-n’-wooly duo produce? Step to it, get to the show early, and find out!

purling

Continuing their credo of ‘no limits,’ the Philadelphia-based trio PURLING HISS fail to repeat themselves, shaking out a bunch of weirdo pop numbers rife with ramshackle; tactile and free. PURLING HISS have broken out of the basement, run through the bedroom and are now loose, out in the streets. Their new album, Weirdon, was released this September on Drag City.

STATE CHAMPION started in 2006 as a moniker for the early acoustic experiments of Ryan Davis (Cropped Out, Sophomore Lounge). It has since evolved into a rock n’ roll band with a Chevy van and not one, but two vinyl records. Their sophomore record, Deep Shit, received quite a level of acclaim. Because it’s awesome! “STATE CHAMPION uphold the long and storied history of Louisville and Chicago’s music interconnected… Digging into the dregs of Royal Trux sludge Americana, angular punk, and torch ballads done with malice, STATE CHAMPION accentuates the punk suffix in cowpunk. Weird, wonky, and wild, STATE CHAMPION are a sight to behold live with their unbridled energy and extremely art-damaged take on electric folk.” – The Decibel Tolls.

NATURAL CHILD, STATE CHAMPION, and ANIMAL CITY at ZANZABAR, Wednesday, April 10th

NC-SC-AC for web
(Flier design by Mikie Poland.)

Cropped Out, The Other Side of Life, and Zanzabar present:

NATURAL CHILD (Nashville, TN; on Infinity Cat Recordings)
STATE CHAMPION (from Louisville/Southern Indiana/Chicago, on Sophomore Lounge Records)
ANIMAL CITY (from Chicago, on Sophomore Lounge)

Wednesday, April 10th

$5 advance tickets available here: http://zanzabarlouisville.ticketfly.com/event/228853-natural-child-louisville/; $7 day of show.

Summer 2009 Wez ate brownies had a vision. He told big black Zack and called Seth 3 times. They started the Nashville-based three piece rock band called NATURAL CHILD. Maybe known as much for their incessant rambling on-stage banter as their unprecedented pure rock sound, NATURAL CHILD are often described as “the greatest rock n’ roll band in the world”, a title which the trio has worked mercilessly hard to gain… and they have the balls to show for it. NATURAL CHILD want to play in Jamaica and want to play at the pyramids. They have a plan that involves Jack White to befriend Keith Richards and be the opening act on Rolling Stones farewell tour, thus having “the greatest rock n’ roll band in the world” torch officially passed on to them. Not Jack White. These guys love to party. And they love to ride in that van. Oh man. NATURAL CHILD are touring in support of Hard in Heaven, their most recent album.

Watch NATURAL CHILD cover “Born to Be Wild” in Louisville here:

Following their long-awaited studio debut You Win Some, You Loser (Sophomore Lounge, 2010), Chicago’s favorite skateshop pop quartet ANIMAL CITY is back on wax with their follow-up full-length, See You In The Funny Pages. Though two and a half years without a proper record might seem like a healthy hunk of downtime, don’t let the calendar fool you. The boys have been busy. Since first forming their creative kinship nearly 7 years ago, key songwriters Sal Cassato and Dakota Loesch have knocked out a dozen-or-so collections of lo-fi, homegrown, harmonious rock jams ranging in style from stoner/loner acoustic wayfaring to full-on, funked-up and jazzed-out anthems. “I can’t deny the enjoyability that comes with a well-edited, snappy rock band like this… Even as I get older and uglier, I refuse to entirely hate anyone and everyone on the grounds that they are not as bitter as myself; bands like Animal City are chicken soup for the soul.” –Yellow Green Red.

STATE CHAMPION, DAVID DANIELL & DOUGLAS MCCOMBS, and FLANGER MAGAZINE at ZANZABAR, Wednesday, November 14th

Cropped Out and The Other Side of Life are proud to present:

STATE CHAMPION (from Louisville/Southern Indiana/Chicago, on Sophomore Lounge Records)
DAVID DANIELL & DOUGLAS McCOMBS (from North Carolina and Chicago, Illinois; members of SAN AGUSTIN and TORTOISE, on Thrill Jockey)
FLANGER MAGAZINE (from Louisville)

Wednesday, November 14th
at ZANZABAR
2100 S. Preston
9 PM, $6, 21-and-over

STATE CHAMPION started in 2006 as a moniker for the early acoustic experiments of Ryan Davis. It has since evolved into a rock n’ roll band with a Chevy van and not one, but two vinyl records. Their sophomore record, Deep Shit, was released earlier this year on Sophomore Lounge Records, and has received quite a level of acclaim. Because it’s awesome!

DAVID DANIELL & DOUGLAS McCOMBS first met in early 2006 while touring as members of Rhys Chatham’s six-guitar Die Donnergötter band. Following that tour, the two spent several months trading albums and discussing making music together; they began their musical collaboration when Daniell moved from New York to Chicago later that year to study pedal steel guitar.

These humble beginnings do little to reflect the depth and breadth of each of their talents; both are highly-respected musicians within their circles. Over the years Daniell has collaborated with many notable musicians, including Loren Connors, Rhys Chatham, Tim Barnes, Jeph Jerman, Thurston Moore, Greg Davis, and Jonathan Kane, as well as releasing numerous albums under his own name and with his band San Agustin on labels such as Table of the Elements and Family Vineyard. McCombs is more often seen wielding a bass guitar, whether as a member of Eleventh Dream Day, the acoustic collective Pullman, or the pioneering and inimitable Tortoise; in his role as the driving force behind Brokeback; or through his varied work with the likes of Tom Ze, Azita Youseffi, Will Oldham, Yo La Tengo, and Calexico. Versions, the new double album by DAVID DANIELL & DOUGLAS McCOMBS,was produced by Louisvillian Ken Brown, also a founding member of Tortoise.

FLANGER MAGAZINE is the handsome duo of Chris Bush and Ben Zoeller, who both have also played in the excellent band Caboladies. Expect some unexpected sounds, from the ridiculous to the sublime, in this, their Louisville debut.

FREE HALLOWEEN PARTY with DAUGHN GIBSON and STATE CHAMPION at the NACHBAR!

Astro Black Records, Cropped Out and The Other Side of Life are proud to present:

A FREE HALLOWEEN PARTY!

with

DAUGHN GIBSON (Carslile, PA; on Sub Pop)

and

STATE CHAMPION (from Louisville/Southern Indiana/Chicago, on Sophomore Lounge Records)

Wednesday, October 31st
at NACHBAR
969 Charles Street (at the corner of Charles and Krieger)
9 PM, 21-and -over
FREE!

DAUGHN GIBSON hails from the Cumberland Valley town of Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The charismatic crooner and sound sculptor’s music sets his subversively witty and colorful tales against an engaging blend of electronic, country and blues. GIBSON’s spirited, DIY approach is informed by his time spent playing in punk and metal bands and stints as a cross-country truck driver. His deep baritone adds to the allure, which posits the handsome balladeer in territory explored by the greats. He’s earned comparisons to the likes of Lee Hazelwood, Scott Walker and Arthur Russell, and contemporary artists like Nicolas Jaar, Magnetic Fields and James Blake. DAUGHN GIBSON’s music first caught the attention of Philadelphia-based indie label White Denim (run by Sub Pop label mate and Pissed Jeans member Matt Korvette), who immediately agreed to release DG’s debut, All Hell, in April 2012. In June of 2012, Dull Knife Records released the 7″ single “Lite Me Up” b/w “The Mark of a Man.” DAUGHN GIBSON’s All Hell won praise from the likes of Pitchfork, SPIN, FILTER, Austin Chronicle, Baltimore City Paper, Philadelphia Weekly, San Francisco Bay Guardian, Brooklyn Vegan, Tiny Mix Tapes, The Needle Drop, and more.

OLD BABY Record Release Show with 200 YEARS and STATE CHAMPION at Zanzabar, Wednesday, April 11th

Cropped Out and The Other Side of Life are proud to present:

OLD BABY (Louisville, KY, featuring members of YOUNG WIDOWS, SAPAT, SHIPPING NEWS, WORKERS; on Hawthorne Street Records)
RECORD RELEASE SHOW

with special guests

200 YEARS (Members of Six Organs of Admittance and Magik Markers, on Drag City)
STATE CHAMPION (from Louisville/Southern Indiana/Chicago, on Sophomore Lounge Records)

Wednesday, April 11th
ZANZABAR
2100 S. Preston Street
9 PM DOORS, $5 cover, 21 and over

OLD BABY is a new Louisville-based band consisting of Todd Cook (SHIPPING NEWS, KINGS DAUGHTERS AND SONS), Jonathan Glen Wood, Neil Argabright (SAPAT), Drew Osborn (WORKERS) and Evan Patterson (YOUNG WIDOWS). This will be the release show for their debut record, Misunderstanding Human Behavior, on Hawthorne Street Records.

200 Years is the new project by Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance, Rangda) and Elisa Ambrogio (Magik Markers). As we wrote in the LEO WEEKLY, their self-titled debut on Drag City “is superficially akin to Chasny’s Six Organs project as it features primarily acoustic guitars, delicately sweet melodies and the occasional accompaniment by harmonium. But the band is really Ambrogio’s showcase, as her voice dominates the album. However, unlike her usually confrontational work with Magik Markers, the overall aesthetic of 200 Years is one of dreamy, contemplative harmony between her voice and Chasny’s guitar.” This show is their official Louisville debut, and is definitely not to be missed!

Welcome them home from a long, grueling, fun spring tour.
