PARLOUR originally began as a solo project from Tim Furnish following the mid-90s dissolution of Crain – the seminal Louisville rock group he co-founded in the late ’80s. PARLOUR evokes “A unique combination of interweaving guitar shards… driven by a dark, relentless rhythm section.” Their most recent album, Simulacrenfield (released on Temporary Residence), was one of our favorites of 2010 and an instant classic.

NEW MOTHER NATURE is a relatively new band on the Louisville scene, but filled with familiar faces. Members of NEW MOTHER NATURE are current or former members of Old Baby, The Phantom Family Halo, Natural Geographic, and many more. They quickly became one of our favorite Louisville bands, and we think you’ll like ‘em as well. Their sound “is rich with straight-forward melodies… all while maintaining a sense of playful, if cautious experimentation.” — Syd Bishop, LEO Weekly.

Visiting Nurse Live

Comprised of electronic drums, keyboards, bass, and effected guitar, VISITING NURSE features long time collaborators Jon Hill, Mike Seymour, and Syd Bishop creating music that seems to somehow straddle the gap between the organic and inorganic, a cyborg pastiche of jazz influenced composition, and rigid structures. For fans of Boards of Canada, Clams Casino, and Biosphere.

OREN AMBARCHI‘s works are hesitant and tense extended songforms located in the cracks between several schools: modern electronics and processing; laminal improvisation and minimalism; hushed, pensive songwriting; the deceptive simplicity and temporal suspensions of composers such as Morton Feldman and Alvin Lucier; and the physicality of rock music, slowed down and stripped back to its bare bones, abstracted and replaced with pure signal.

From the late 90’s his experiments in guitar abstraction and extended technique have led to a more personal and unique sound-world incorporating a broader palette of instruments and sensibilities. On releases such as Grapes From The Estate and In The Pendulum’s Embrace AMBARCHI employed glass harmonica, strings, bells, piano, drums and percussion, creating fragile textures as light as air which tenuously coexist with the deep, wall-shaking bass tones derived from his guitar.

AMBARCHI has performed and recorded with a diverse array of artists such as Fennesz, Charlemagne Palestine, Sunn 0)), Thomas Brinkmann, Keiji Haino, Alvin Lucier, John Zorn, Merzbow, Jim O’Rourke, Keith Rowe, Akio Suzuki, Phill Niblock, John Tilbury, Richard Pinhas, Evan Parker, crys cole, Fire! and many more.

Since 2001 AMBARCHI has toured Europe, North America and Japan regularly and has performed at major festivals such as ATP (UK), Sonar (Spain), Mutek (Canada), CTM (Germany), INA GRM (France), Roskilde (Denmark), Etna Fest (Italy), Festival De Mexico (Mexico) and many more including a recent live collaboration with the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra at the Tectonics festival in Reykjavik. His acclaimed trio with Keiji Haino and Jim O’Rourke performs in Tokyo annually with many of their concerts documented on AMBARCHI‘s Black Truffle label.

AMBARCHI has released numerous recordings for labels such as Touch, Southern Lord, Editions Mego, Drag City, Kranky and Tzadik. His solo release Sagittarian Domain was voted #1 in Spin magazine’s Best Avant albums of 2012.

His latest release is Quixotism which was listed in The Wire magazine’s top 50 releases of 2014. He was also named one of Pitchfork’s Experimental Artists of the Year for 2014, along with Matthew Shipp.

Invisible Things

The duo INVISIBLE THINGS consists of Mark Shippy (ex-U.S. Maple) and Jim Sykes (ex-Parts and Labor, Grooms), who met in 2008 when they backed Marnie Stern supporting her This is It… album, touring the U.S. with Gang Gang Dance and sharing bills with Quasi, Sic Alps, Talk Normal, and others. After this they began collaborating as a duo, sporadically, as Sykes was touring with Grooms and living in London, but still managed to play Steve Albini’s PRF BBQ and similar such events. INVISIBLE THINGS debut, Home IS the Sun, was released on Porter Records in fall 2012. The new INVISIBLE THINGS album, Time AS One Axis, was recorded by MARTIN BISI (Swans, Sonic Youth, Herbie Hancock) at BC Studios in Brooklyn, New York.

WIRES.UNDER.TENSION and VISITING NURSE at THE NEW VINTAGE, Sunday, October 20th

The Other Side of Life is proud to present:

WIRES.UNDER.TENSION (The Bronx, NY; on Western Vinyl)
VISITING NURSE (Louisville, KY)

Sunday, October 20th
at THE NEW VINTAGE
2126 S. Preston
8 PM, $5, 21-and-over!

WIRES.UNDER.TENSION is a duo based in The South Bronx. Combining homegrown audio sampling instruments with ferocious beats and adventurous orchestration, WUT‘s angular gymnastics reflect the raw imagery of their home turf. Multi-instrumentalist Christopher Tignor switches dexterously between violin and the rest of the arsenal while Theo Metz extracts brutal truths from the kit. Together WUT is rethinking what instrumental music can be about when musicianship and restless experimentation rule the scene.
