PARLOUR originally began as a solo project from Tim Furnish following the mid-90s dissolution of Crain – the seminal Louisville rock group he co-founded in the late ’80s. PARLOUR evokes “A unique combination of interweaving guitar shards… driven by a dark, relentless rhythm section.” Their most recent album, Simulacrenfield (released on Temporary Residence), was one of our favorites of 2010 and an instant classic.

NEW MOTHER NATURE is a relatively new band on the Louisville scene, but filled with familiar faces. Members of NEW MOTHER NATURE are current or former members of Old Baby, The Phantom Family Halo, Natural Geographic, and many more. They quickly became one of our favorite Louisville bands, and we think you’ll like ‘em as well. Their sound “is rich with straight-forward melodies… all while maintaining a sense of playful, if cautious experimentation.” — Syd Bishop, LEO Weekly.

Visiting Nurse Live

Comprised of electronic drums, keyboards, bass, and effected guitar, VISITING NURSE features long time collaborators Jon Hill, Mike Seymour, and Syd Bishop creating music that seems to somehow straddle the gap between the organic and inorganic, a cyborg pastiche of jazz influenced composition, and rigid structures. For fans of Boards of Canada, Clams Casino, and Biosphere.

ANDREW RINEHART is the latest moniker from Louisville, KY-born and Los Angeles-based songwriter Andrew Sellers. First active musically as a teenager in Louisville’s underground hardcore scene, Sellers’ band Flight Nineteen played regionally with acts like At The Drive In and Hot Water Music. His first solo album Memories Are Hunting Horns, released in 2010 under the pseudonym Saredren Wells, walked a tightrope between more conventional songwriter fare and the off-kilter world of artists like Daniel Johnston, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, and Sufjan Stevens. Sellers relocated to New York City, eventually co-founding both The Body Actualized Center, a DIY arts space in Brooklyn, and the band Splash, whom he toured the US with in the Summer of 2012. Turning his attention back to solo work in 2013, Sellers adopted the moniker Rinehart and released “The Funeral Home Sessions,” a 3-song EP of covers. Distilling his many aliases down to simply ANDREW RINEHART, Sellers is now set to release Everything (Parts I, II, and III), his most ambitious work yet. An album in 3 EP installments, Everything highlights Sellers’ chameleon-like talent for genre-hopping, in turns both melancholy and magnanimous, a deft synthesis of all of his previous projects.

DANE WATERS is one of Louisville’s brightest musical talents. As a solo performer as well as member of Sapat, she displays an impeccable melodic sensibility, and has a voice so wonderfully haunting, it sends chills down your spine. Her most recent releases, Opera Arias and A Harp with Teeth that is Drooling and Crying, is available on bandcamp as well as finer Louisville record stores.

purling

It takes balls to let PURLING HISS get in your face- their records are a half-corroded, screaming roar of high-end guitars crushed together, obliterating vocals and drums with their singular assault. Well, if you’ve got balls, get ready to swing ‘em! PURLING HISS have broken out of the basement, run through the bedroom and are now loose, out in the streets, blasting one of the great guitar albums in the past couple minutes. Their new album, Dizzy Polizzy, comes out April 22nd on Drag City.

Although best known for his work with iconoclasts Charalambides, which he co-founded with Christina Carter in 1991, TOM CARTER has recently focused on his solo performances and recordings, which have increasingly featured visual components – including collaborations with filmmakers Martha Colburn and Margarida Garcia. Currently, Carter is on a solo US tour with New Zealand’s Gate, and working on two solo LPs for release in 2014. TOM CARTER is also well-known for collaborations with other musicians. Fellow travelers have included Marc Orleans (Sunburned Hand of the Man), Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance), Tom Surgal, Marcia Bassett, Paul Flaherty, Thurston Moore (Chelsea Light Moving), Dredd Foole, Loren Connors, Pip Proud, Jandek, Bardo Pond, Steve Gunn, and Matt Valentine, among many others. Over the past decades, he refined his evolving ideas of tonal immersion (and the quest for the perfect fuzz tone) into a layered sonic toolkit of rough beauty. He now lives in New York City.

JONATHAN WOOD & LOWE SUTHERLAND are known to connoisseurs of Louisville music, primarily for their main musical vehicles Old Baby and Sapat, respectively. They’re taking a dynamic duo detour down a ramshackle dirt road, riding a pink Cadillac into the sunset of a February night. Will they fly off the handle, riding high like Thelma & Louise James Taylor and Dennis Wilson into an expansive western sky? Or will they keep it down-to-earth, dusting up your jacket and filling your lungs with exhaust while they peel out, squealing their tires? There’s only one way to find out, dear listener…

CIAN NUGENT is a guitar player and composer from Dublin, Ireland who combines personal passions, such as suburban/coastal blues, traditional musics, late 1960s & ’70s singer-songwriters, jazz ambitions, 20th century composition and the Takoma school into a deeply personal style. His music boasts an orchestrated and fully instrumented sound that is playful and eerie at the same time. In the past he has toured with people such as Jack Rose, Glenn Jones, Micah Blue Smaldone, Ben Reynolds, Nalle, The Family Elan, George Stavis, Jozef van Wissem, C Joynes, Peter Delaney, Thinguma*jigSaw and James Blackshaw throughout Europe and the United States.

PILLARS AND TONGUES, MAN FOREVER, and NEW MOTHER NATURE at ZANZABAR, Wednesday, May 30th

Cropped Out and The Other Side of Life are proud to present:

PILLARS AND TONGUES (Chicago, Illinois)
MAN FOREVER (Brooklyn, New York; on Thrill Jockey)
NEW MOTHER NATURE (Louisville, Kentucky)

Wednesday, May 30th
at ZANZABAR
2100 S. Preston
9 PM doors, $6, 21-and-over

PILLARS AND TONGUES is a trio based in Chicago, Illinois whose musical pursuits seem to defy genre categorization. The ongoing result of these pursuits has been called, variously, “holy” and “sexy” and it may well be the tension between these two concepts which lights the fire under (over?) PILLARS AND TONGUES. Think on those things which are so beautiful they become obscene. Speaking literally, the trio makes extended use of the human voice, violin, double bass, drums, bells and organs. The music is perhaps distinctly American in both its affair with American forms and its refusal to adhere to them at all.

Listen to a track by PILLARS AND TONGUES here: “Oaky (Doting, in Late Summer)”

John Colpitts (aka Kid Millions) is a Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist, composer and writer who is perhaps best known as the drummer for Oneida. MAN FOREVER, his vehicle for exploring the outer limits of drum performance, was created to overwhelm, to investigate the nuances that bloom in the midst of repetitive music, and to act as a pure sound experience. Thrill Jockey will release MAN FOREVER‘s first album, Pansophical Cataract, on May 15th.
