MAN FOREVER is an exploratory percussion project helmed by John Colpitts (aka Kid Millions), one of New York’s most versatile and critically-lauded musical collaborators, and a founding member of Oneida. Since its inception in 2010, MAN FOREVER has hosted an impressive list of guest performers, but few have been as specially qualified to perform Colpitts’ technically challenging meditative workouts. Colpitts continues to be one of the most in-demand drummers in New York. Throughout 2013 he toured as a member of Spiritualized, performed in duos with Greg Fox and Jim Sauter, recorded a record with Akron/Family, released an album with People of the North on Thrill Jockey, and performed with Rhys Chatham as a member of Oneida. So far in 2014 he has recorded an album with Rick Moody and has performed with William Basinski at the Ecstatic Music Festival in March.

Cincinnati, Ohio-based saxophone improviser and experimental artist JON LORENZ has been heavily involved in Cincinnati’s experimental scene for many years, running the Art Damage Lodge from 2007-2011, and presenting shows then after under the moniker Dome Presents.  He may be best known for his heavily amplified sax/ clarinet duo, Wasteland Jazz Unit, but also plays in numerous other projects including Public Housing, Early Tunnels, and Ohio Unsemble.  He has also played in or collaborated with the likes of Burning Star Core, Rhys Chatham, Ryan Jewell, Fred Lonberg-Holm, C. Spencer Yeh, Mike Shiflet, Darin Gray, Dylan Posa, and many others.  Solo, LORENZ combines amplified sax smears with tape loops, homemade electronics, and oscillators.

NEW BUMS‘ debut album, Voices in a Rented Room, is sweet and sensitive, hard and nasty, everything you need from your new record. NEW BUMS play their songs on mostly acoustic guitars, making it easy to hear what they’re saying – but then they swathe their voices in reverb, making it a little harder again. What’s life if you don’t have to try, right? The other reason for the reverb is that the Bums just LURVE that addle-headed state of mind where you know your life is wrong but you don’t do much about it – and so the songs are alternatively, moments of sodden introspection that turn to sharply focused acting-out fantasies, the types of which we all need to get ourselves by. NEW BUMS rhymes with two Bums, which is prolly closer to the truth – the band’s made up of Ben Chasny and Donovan Quinn, on guitars and singing. For the record, they employed a rhythm section, but what really makes the air move is the relationship between those guitars and voices, hanging in the thick and reverberant air. For those of us who know Ben from Six Organs of Admittance and Donovan from Skygreen Leopards, NEW BUMS is exciting for bringing them together in ways they couldn’t possibly have realized in their parent bands. This is new territory for both Bums, but also carries the whiff of their former selves. Voices in a Rented Room is out today, so make sure you haunt your local record flop, they ought to have this if they have any self-respect left. Stick out your thumb, and pull in a bum – starting now and through the spring and the rest of time, etc. This show is their Louisville debut.

JR Robinson has been writing and recording music as WREKMEISTER HARMONIES in various incarnations since 2006. His most recent album, You’ve Always Meant So Much To Me, was written to accompany a film Robinson shot in decimated Detroit locations, the desert of Joshua Tree and decaying forests of Tasmania. In 2012 he brought together some of the most revered musicians in the black metal and experimental music worlds (Jef Whitehead of Leviathan, Sanford Parker and Andrew Markuszewski of Nachmystium, Jamie Fennelly aka Mind Over Mirrors, Mark Solotroff of Anatomy of Habit, Bruce Lamont of Yakuza, and more) to perform the 38 minute composition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago to much acclaim and a sold out theater. The collaborators for the live performance joined Robinson at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio later that year to record the composition in full. This show is his Louisville debut.

RYLEY WALKER is a 24 year-old singer/songwriter and guitarist from Chicago, Illinois. Having kicked around Chicago’s experimental free/noise music scene for several years, Ryley recently turned to a folk-rock sound inspired by some of his heroes, among them Tim Hardin, Tim Buckley, and Bert Jansch. The result is a poised and accomplished debut album, recorded in Chicago by Cooper Crain (guitarist/keyboardist in Cave). The album will be released by Tompkins Square in April 2014.

“With the charming swagger of jazz-folk troubadour Tim Buckley and the resonant, full picking style of Bert Jansch, “The West Wind” comes from Walker’s first widely available release, a three-song 12”. With acoustic guitar in hand and a voice like browned butter, Walker swings and sways in a lush string-and-piano arrangement right out of Buckley’sStarsailor; it slowly picks up to a swirling gallop without bucking the rhythm.” – NPR Music

GLENN JONES is a unique voice working in the decades-long tradition of American Primitivism. What sets him apart from the many devotees to this style is the combination of expressive playing and technical skill, most significantly his inventive use of alternate tunings and partial capos. As anyone knows who has seen him perform, Glenn is a remarkable storyteller, and his songs reflect that talent. The songs on Glenn’s latest, My Garden State, are evocative and redolent, and serve as a testament to Glenn’s talent for conveying a wide array of emotions, many times in one song, without saying a word. My Garden State was written in the New Jersey home where Glenn’s family moved in 1966, while he was caring for his mother who suffers from Alzheimer’s. My Garden State was recorded by Laura Baird in Allentown, NJ. Laura joins Glenn on the first proper song, “Across the Tappan Zee” on banjo, interweaving her plaintive melodies with Glenn’s gentle picking. Laura’s sister Meg, who was a founding member of Espers and plays with Laura as The Baird Sisters, also joins in on the final minutes of “Going Back to East Montgomery,” an eight minute long composition that showcases Glenn’s ability to craft a long form piece that is at once expansive and immediate. The songs on My Garden State could have been written by no one except Glenn Jones, brimming joy, sorrow, and the complex in-between that makes life worth living.

NATHAN SALSBURG is an archivist, producer, guitarist, and writer based in Louisville, Kentucky. Since 2000 he has worked for the Alan Lomax Archive, for which he currently serves in the capacity of Curator, compiling and producing album releases of the renowned folklorist’s recordings, and managing the Archive’s online audio, photo, and video catalogs, and its popular YouTube channel. Salsburg has also produced archival releases for the Grammy-winning Tompkins Square label, and he curates the Twos & Fews imprint of Chicago’s Drag City record company. As an acoustic guitarist, he has released two critically acclaimed albums — a duet with Chicago’s James Elkington, entitled Avos (Tompkins Square, 2011) and a solo record called Affirmed (No Quarter, 2011) — and has appeared on WNYC Radio’s “Soundcheck” program and in NPR’s “Tiny Desk Concert” series. No Quarter will release his second solo album, Hard For to Win and Can’t Be Won, in Autumn 2013. NATHAN BOWLES is a musician and teacher living in the mountains of southwestern Virginia.  He and his bandmates in the Black Twig Pickers steep themselves in local traditions of Appalachian folk music and dance. In December of 2011 he holed up for a couple of days at Black Dirt Studios to record and mix his first solo banjo record, all performed on a handmade 5-string banjo built by his friend Greg Galbraith at Buckeye Banjos.  Over about 7 hours and a bottle of Elmer T. Lee, he laid down the material for A Bottle, A Buckeye, which was released on LP in 2012 by Soft Abuse.

The new album Time Was marks a new stage in the evolution of ZOMES, a musical project begun by Asa Osborne (formerly of Lungfish). The album marks the first recordings of ZOMES as a duo and the first time an album was recorded in a studio and not on a cassette deck. It all began when Asa Osborne was performing at the Perspectives Festival in Sweden, where he met Hanna through a mutual friend in the Skull Defekts. During Osborne’s performance, Hanna, a vocalist, ended up improvising along with the music with stunning results. Realizing the complimentary aspects of their musical personalities and their natural musical affinity, Hanna joined Asa on stage for an improvised performance in a Stockholm art gallery several days later. Asa invited Hanna to perform with him again at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City on the last date on his tour with Beach House, beginning a trans-Atlantic exchange of ideas. Time Was is an expansion of the ZOMES aesthetic, an open and natural collaboration between like-minded individuals. While there are certainly obvious musical connections to Osborne’s work with Lungfish, the duo of Asa and Hanna have built on this considerable foundation and expanded the form to glorious new heights. ZOMES will play Zanzabar as a trio at this, their Louisville debut.

WALFORD / TROTTER / RILES is the trio of Britt Walford, Tyler Trotter, and Zak Riles, all of whom have been active within the Louisville music scene, and in the greater world, as musicians, promoters, sound engineers, and enthusiasts. Walford is best known as an integral member of Louisville legends Slint and Evergreen, as well as a player in Squirrel Bait, Maurice, The For Carnation, and many other musical entities. Riles is best known as a member of the Temporary Residence Ltd. band Grails, while Trotter has performed with the Phantom Family Halo, and was the longtime soundperson for the California Sound Trio. This show marks their first-ever Louisville show as a trio!

SHEDDING has been a solo vehicle for Connor Bell since 2001, and has released several items over those years available at Ocio and Hometapes. SHEDDING‘s music is meditative and still, eerie and unsettling — yet with a spectacular sense of melody.

MATMOS is M.C. Schmidt and Drew Daniel, aided and abetted by many others. Currently based in Baltimore, the duo formed in San Francisco in the mid 1990s, and self-released their debut album in 1997. Marrying the conceptual tactics and noisy textures of object-based musique concrete to a rhythmic matrix rooted in electronic pop music, the two quickly became known for their highly unusual sound sources: amplified crayfish nerve tissue, the pages of bibles turning, water hitting copper plates, liposuction surgery, cameras and VCRs, chin implant surgery, contact microphones on human hair, rat cages, tanks of helium, a cow uterus, human skulls, snails, cigarettes, cards shuffling, laser eye surgery, whoopee cushions, balloons, latex fetish clothing, rhinestones, Polish trains, insects, life support systems, inflatable blankets, rock salt, solid gold coins, the sound of a frozen stream thawing in the sun, a five gallon bucket of oatmeal. These raw materials are manipulated into surprisingly accessible forms, and often supplemented by traditional musical instruments played by the group’s large circle of friends and collaborators. The result is a model of electronic composition as a relational network that connects sources and outcomes together; information about the process of creation activates the listening experience, providing the listener with entry points into sometimes densely allusive, baroque recordings. Since their debut, MATMOS have released over eight albums, and in 2001 they were asked to collaborate with the Icelandic singer Bjork on her Vespertine album, and subsequently embarked on two world tours as part of her band. In addition to musical collaborations with Antony, So Percussion, David Tibet, the Rachel’s, Lesser, Wobbly, Zeena Parkins, and the Princeton Laptop Orchestra, MATMOS have also collaborated with a wide range of artists across disciplines, from the visual artist Daria Martin to the playwright Young Jean Lee to Berlin-based choreographer Ayman Harper. Their newest album, The Marriage of True Minds, will be released on February 19th, 2013 by Thrill Jockey Records.

HORSE LORDS is a band from Baltimore, Maryland. According to baltimorefishbowl.com, they “offer that rare opportunity: witnessing a ragged, seething kind of greatness from a band not yet heralded by any major taste-making media outlets. Which is to say you can just unselfconsciously enjoy them. Bands like this remind you that musical greatness is not manufactured by record labels and hype machines; they’re snatched up by those entities somewhere further down the line.” HORSE LORDS are supporting and performing with MATMOS on the latter’s entire US tour.

PARLOUR originally began as a solo project from Tim Furnish following the mid-90s dissolution of CRAIN – the seminal Louisville rock group he co-founded in the late ’80s. Currently playing with new drummer (Greg Morris) and synth player (Brian Sweeney), Furnish’s PARLOUR evokes “A unique combination of interweaving guitar shards… driven by a dark, relentless rhythm section.” Their most recent album, Simulacrenfield (released on Temporary Residence), was one of our favorites of 2010.

UPDATE, 2/26/2013: Here’s a couple of things to note about this show:

1. Doors to this event will open at 8 PM, and music will start at 9 PM sharp! That means Parlour will play first, right at 9 PM. Due to time constraints, the show will have to start at 9 PM. So get there early! Horse Lords will play at approximately 9:45 PM, and Matmos will be onstage by 10:45 PM, ending at midnight (if not a little before).

STATE CHAMPION started in 2006 as a moniker for the early acoustic experiments of Ryan Davis. It has since evolved into a rock n’ roll band with a Chevy van and not one, but two vinyl records. Their sophomore record, Deep Shit, was released earlier this year on Sophomore Lounge Records, and has received quite a level of acclaim. Because it’s awesome!

DAVID DANIELL & DOUGLAS McCOMBS first met in early 2006 while touring as members of Rhys Chatham’s six-guitar Die Donnergötter band. Following that tour, the two spent several months trading albums and discussing making music together; they began their musical collaboration when Daniell moved from New York to Chicago later that year to study pedal steel guitar.

 These humble beginnings do little to reflect the depth and breadth of each of their talents; both are highly-respected musicians within their circles. Over the years Daniell has collaborated with many notable musicians, including Loren Connors, Rhys Chatham, Tim Barnes, Jeph Jerman, Thurston Moore, Greg Davis, and Jonathan Kane, as well as releasing numerous albums under his own name and with his band San Agustin on labels such as Table of the Elements and Family Vineyard. McCombs is more often seen wielding a bass guitar, whether as a member of Eleventh Dream Day, the acoustic collective Pullman, or the pioneering and inimitable Tortoise; in his role as the driving force behind Brokeback; or through his varied work with the likes of Tom Ze, Azita Youseffi, Will Oldham, Yo La Tengo, and Calexico. Versions, the new double album by DAVID DANIELL & DOUGLAS McCOMBS,was produced by Louisvillian Ken Brown, also a founding member of Tortoise.

FLANGER MAGAZINE is the handsome duo of Chris Bush and Ben Zoeller, who both have also played in the excellent band Caboladies. Expect some unexpected sounds, from the ridiculous to the sublime, in this, their Louisville debut.

PILLARS AND TONGUES is a trio based in Chicago, Illinois whose musical pursuits seem to defy genre categorization. The ongoing result of these pursuits has been called, variously, “holy” and “sexy” and it may well be the tension between these two concepts which lights the fire under (over?) PILLARS AND TONGUES. Think on those things which are so beautiful they become obscene. Speaking literally, the trio makes extended use of the human voice, violin, double bass, drums, bells and organs. The music is perhaps distinctly American in both its affair with American forms and its refusal to adhere to them at all.

John Colpitts (aka Kid Millions) is a Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist, composer and writer who is perhaps best known as the drummer for Oneida. MAN FOREVER, his vehicle for exploring the outer limits of drum performance, was created to overwhelm, to investigate the nuances that bloom in the midst of repetitive music, and to act as a pure sound experience. Thrill Jockey will release MAN FOREVER‘s first album, Pansophical Cataract, on May 15th.

NEW MOTHER NATURE is a relatively new band on the Louisville scene, but filled with familiar faces. Members of NEW MOTHER NATURE are current or former members of Old Baby, The Phantom Family Halo, Natural Geographic, and many more. They’re quickly becoming one of our favorite new bands, and we think you’ll like ’em as well.
